A hernia essentially occurs when some part of an organ comes through the wall of the space that it is normally contained in. As this wall attempts to heal, a part of that organ can be constricted. Several types of hernias include:

• Incisional Hernia: When some part of the intestines or an organ protrudes through a surgical incision. Surgical repair is often necessary.
• Inguinal Hernia: When part of the intestines protrudes through the inguinal canal. This is one of the most common types of hernia, and we perform this repair frequently.
• Umbilical Hernia: When a hernia is present at the navel where the umbilical cord attaches. This is a congenital defect that may correct spontaneously but also may require surgical intervention.
• Hiatal Hernia: This hernia occurs when part of the stomach protrudes through an opening in the diaphragm, the muscular structure directly above it that causes breathing. This repair is often conducted using a laparoscope.
